The old parable that explains cognitive bias better than the term itself

Here is a question worth sitting with: why is it so hard to change your mind, even when you are looking straight at evidence that you are wrong? Most explanations reach for modern vocabulary — confirmation bias, motivated reasoning, cognitive dissonance. This teaching reaches for an old parable instead, and it may explain the actual mechanism better than any of those terms do.
There was a man who kept pigeons. Pigeons were the only bird he had ever really known. One day he came across someone else's pet hawk. Rather than recognize it as something new, he concluded it must be "a strange kind of pigeon." And he did not stop at the conclusion — he took a pair of scissors, cut the hawk's wings and talons, and went to considerable trouble trying to reshape it into the form of a pigeon.
The teaching is not really about birds. It is about what the mind does the instant it meets something that does not fit any category it already owns: it rarely expands to make room for the new thing. More often, it reshapes the new thing until it fits an old box — even when that takes real, deliberate effort, like reaching for a pair of scissors.
The teaching describes every mind as running on a kind of program, installed from birth — language, self-concept, habitual reactions — before anyone had a say in the matter. You do not feel any alarm about this, the teaching points out, because your very ability to notice it is itself part of the program. It is difficult to see the edges of a system you have never once stood outside of.
Even sincere self-improvement can get absorbed into this same system. The teaching makes an unusually blunt claim here: someone can work their way out of one trap only to build a new, more sophisticated identity out of the very effort to escape it — different material, same underlying operating system.
The teaching offers a contrasting story: a man finds a Buddha meditating alone in a forest with nothing to sit on. Over months, at real personal cost, he finds a fallen log, shapes it into a seat, and gives it to the Buddha. Nothing about that act required the man to have the right beliefs, the right vocabulary, or a finished understanding of anything. What it required was total, unselfconscious sincerity — and the teaching says that is precisely what reaches something real, in a way that reciting the correct ideas about yourself does not.
There is a real difference between adopting a belief — telling yourself "I am not my thoughts" as a kind of slogan — and a single moment of genuine, ego-free sincerity. The teaching is explicit that only the second one actually touches anything. The first is just new furniture inside the same old program.
Next time your first reaction to something unfamiliar is to force it into a box you already own — a person's opinion, an unfamiliar way of living, an idea that challenges something you believe — that reflex is worth noticing before acting on it. The useful question is rarely "how do I make this fit what I already know." It is closer to: am I willing to let my own categories be the thing that changes, instead of the thing in front of me?
Left out of this post: the teaching's deeper account of how this "program" is said to carry forward between lives, and its more technical description of citta-niyama, dhamma-niyama, and kamma-niyama — the three orders of lawfulness said to operate beneath it. Genuinely rich material, but it assumes a grounding in rebirth and dependent origination that a first-time reader is unlikely to have.
